Ironically, the sale of this house was, for Elizabeth, the final straw in their deteriorating marriage. “The straw that broke the camel’s back came the day he told me he’d sold the house and bought an apartment at Watergate,” she explained. “He said I had to get rid of all my animals. Click! That was the coup de grace. I felt I deserved more consideration. It wasn’t as though I hadn’t contributed to our lives, for Pete’s sake. I’d even sold the diamond engagement ring Mike Todd gave me and the Taylor-Burton diamond to keep up with our expenses. And now I wasn’t even allowed to keep my pets.”
