Elizabeth lived with John Warner at Atoka Farm, his nearly one-thousand-acre cattle farm near Middlesburg, Virginia. Elizabeth first visited the farm in 1976. As the two strolled arm in arm across the property and Warner introduced her to his animals, she told him how much it reminded her of England. On December 4, 1976, as cattle grazed in the distance, they were married in an intimate sunset ceremony on the property. “It was a high hill in the back of the main house where you could see down the valley of Virginia, probably for half a mile,” John recalled. “It’s a beautiful view. We decided to be married on the knob of the hill so that people a half mile away with a telescope could follow the wedding.”

The 1860 fieldstone home spanned seven thousand square feet and featured five bedrooms. The Warners famously welcomed Barbara Walters for an interview in their cozy farmhouse kitchen. The property also boasted a pool, tennis court, and various outbuildings, including a log cabin, barns, and a horse stable, which meant that Elizabeth could indulge her favourite country pursuit, riding, in the heart of Virginia’s hunt country.
