The 42nd Annual Golden Globe Awards

Elizabeth received the prestigious Cecil B. DeMille Award at the 42nd Golden Globes on January 27, 1985. The award is bestowed for “outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment”.

In her deeply moving speech, Liza Minnelli, who presented Elizabeth with the award, praised her legendary career and qualities as a friend: “I feel like I’ve known Elizabeth my whole life, but that, in fact, is not true. When I was little, I met her on the set when my father was directing her at MGM. But I really didn’t know her. I mean, I only got to know her when I grew up. And she was just the biggest star in the world. And I realized, as time went by and the years passed, and we became really good friends, one thing remained constant: Wherever we were and whenever we met, Elizabeth always was the biggest star in the world. I mean, the woman is the biggest star in the world. Sure, she played parts people expected her to play, but she also surprised the hell out of everybody. Five Academy Award nominations. Two Oscars as Best Actress. Her lifetime achievement most certainly is distinguished. Her career is extraordinary. And most importantly, and I can say this because I know this, if you ever need her as a friend, she’s right there, and she’s beside you, and she’s solid, and I love you very much.”

Elizabeth’s characteristic self-deprecating sense of humour was in evidence as she accepted her award from the stage: “I never dreamed, ever, that I would be standing here one day holding this award myself—not even to give it to somebody else! But to have it for myself—it’s amazing to me. And to be given it by the press? That’s really incredible!”

The audience roared its approval.
