The David Frost Show

Two years after their first interview, David Frost once again sat down for a conversation with the Burtons. This time the occasion was Elizabeth’s fortieth birthday. It was recorded in Budapest, where she celebrated this milestone (Richard was hard at work making Bluebeard in the Hungarian capital).

The 150-minute interview was shown over two days in March 1972. The first episode, “Elizabeth Taylor at Forty,” featured Elizabeth exclusively. The second part of the interview, which aired the following day, included both Elizabeth and Richard.

At one point the wide-ranging conversation turned to the topic of gender differences. “What is the role of women in relation to men?” Frost asked Elizabeth.

“I like a man to be the dominating figure in my life,” she responded, “but I like also to be his equal. I don’t want somebody to boss me around. I don’t want somebody to tell me what to do if it’s just for the sake of telling me. Do you know what I mean, David?”
