Elizabeth made her first TV movie, Divorce His – Divorce Hers, for Harlech TV, of which she and Richard were its largest individual shareholders (Richard was also on the board of directors). “We own so much of Harlech Television that we thought we should really do some work for them,” Richard joked.
John Frankenheimer was originally set to direct Divorce His – Divorce Hers, but left the production. His replacement was Waris Hussein, who had recently helmed Henry VIII and His Six Wives (1972).
When the American Broadcasting Company (ABC) put up over a million dollars in funding, Divorce His – Divorce Hers was modified for the American TV format and audiences. There it was presented over two nights as part of the ABC Movie of the Week series.
